What is GEO? Generative Engine Optimization explained for Singapore and Malaysia businesses

Short answerGEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the practice of making your business easy for AI assistants to understand, trust and recommend, so that when someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude or Google AI for a provider, your business is named in the answer.

Why GEO matters now

More people in Singapore and Malaysia now ask an AI assistant before they search. Instead of ten links, they get a short written answer — often a list of two to five businesses, with a few source links underneath.

That changes the game in two ways:

  1. There are fewer slots. A Google results page has ten organic positions plus maps and ads. An AI answer may name only three businesses.
  2. The answer is assembled from many sources. AI assistants combine your website with reviews, directories, forum threads, news and comparison articles. Ranking well with your own site is not enough if the rest of the web is silent or inconsistent about you.

How do AI assistants decide whom to recommend?

No AI company publishes a full formula, and each engine works differently. Across engines, a few factors show up consistently:

  • Can it read you? If AI search crawlers are blocked by your robots.txt or CDN, or your content only appears after JavaScript runs, the assistant may have little to work with.
  • Does it understand what you are? Clear statements of what you do, for whom and where — on your site and in structured data — reduce ambiguity.
  • Can it verify you? The same business name, address, services and description across Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, directories and review sites make you a confident recommendation.
  • Do trusted sources mention you? AI assistants often cite review sites, local forums, “best of” articles and news. Being accurately present there matters.
  • Do you answer the question? Pages that answer a specific question in the first paragraph are easier for AI to quote.

What does GEO work involve?

Area Typical work
Access robots.txt and CDN bot settings, sitemaps, llms.txt, server-rendered HTML
Understanding Structured data (Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, FAQ), clear service and location pages
Verification Consistent business facts across profiles, directories and review sites
Authority Mentions and citations on the sources AI assistants already use for your category
Content Answer-first pages for the questions your customers ask
Measurement Tracking a set of real prompts across engines, sampled multiple times

Is GEO different in Southeast Asia?

The principles are global, but the inputs are local. People in Singapore and Malaysia ask with local place names (“near Tampines”, “in PJ”), local phrasing, and — in Malaysia especially — in more than one language. The sources AI draws on also differ: local forums, local listing sites and local media.

That is why we build prompt sets per market and city, and test in English plus Bahasa Melayu or Chinese where customers use them.

How do you measure GEO?

Because AI answers vary between runs, a single screenshot proves little. A sound measurement:

  1. Defines a fixed set of prompts customers really ask.
  2. Runs each prompt several times on each engine.
  3. Records mention rate (how often you are named), position in the answer, and citation sources.
  4. Repeats on a schedule and compares against competitors.

Where to start

  1. Run our free AI visibility check to make sure AI crawlers can read your site.
  2. Make sure your business facts are consistent on your site, Google Business Profile and LinkedIn.
  3. Add Organization or LocalBusiness structured data.
  4. Write one page per core service that answers “who is the best … in [city]” honestly and specifically.

If you want to know where you actually stand against competitors, an AI Visibility Audit measures it with real prompts.
