GEO vs SEO vs AEO: what is the difference, and do you need all three?
Short answerSEO aims to rank your pages in search results; GEO aims to get your business named and cited inside AI-generated answers; AEO is a closely related term for being selected as the direct answer. They share a technical foundation, so most businesses should treat GEO as an extension of SEO, not a replacement.
The short version
| SEO | GEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank pages in search results | Be named and cited in AI answers | Be selected as the direct answer |
| Where | Google, Bing results pages | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Copilot, Google AI Overviews / AI Mode | Featured snippets, voice assistants, AI answers |
| Main metric | Rankings, clicks, traffic | Mention rate, citations, AI referral traffic | Answer selection |
| Key inputs | Content, links, technical health | Everything in SEO + entity consistency, third-party mentions, answer-first content | Concise, well-structured answers |
In practice, many people use GEO and AEO interchangeably. What matters is the shift from “rank a page” to “be part of the answer”.
What carries over from SEO
Most of the SEO foundation still applies, and often matters more:
- Crawlability. If search crawlers cannot read a page, neither can the AI built on top of search.
- Clear structure. Descriptive titles, headings and focused pages help both.
- Authority. Being referenced by reputable sites helps rankings and helps AI trust you.
- Speed and HTML rendering. Many AI crawlers do not execute JavaScript; server-rendered HTML is safest.
What GEO adds
- Entity consistency. AI assistants are cautious about recommending a business they cannot verify. Your name, description, services and location should match across your site, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, directories and review sites.
- Third-party presence. AI answers frequently cite review sites, forums, comparison articles and news. A strong site with no outside mentions is often skipped.
- Answer-first writing. A page that states the answer in its first one or two sentences is easier to quote correctly.
- Prompt-based measurement. Instead of tracking keywords only, you track real questions across several engines, and you sample each one more than once because answers vary.
- AI crawler policy. Deciding which AI crawlers to allow — search, user-triggered fetching, and training — is now part of technical SEO.
Does GEO replace SEO?
No. Google is still a major source of traffic in Singapore and Malaysia, and Google’s own AI features draw on its search index. Several AI assistants also use web search to ground their answers. Weak SEO usually means weak GEO.
The practical approach: keep your SEO foundation healthy, then add the GEO layers above, starting with the ones your audit shows are missing.
Which should a small business prioritise?
- If your site has technical problems (blocked crawlers, JavaScript-only content, no structured data): fix those first — they affect both.
- If your site is sound but AI never mentions you: focus on entity consistency and third-party presence.
- If competitors are recommended and you are not: compare which sources AI cites for them, and close those gaps.
